A PUBLIC SERVICE FROM GREEN BUILDER MEDIA

A clearer place to start.

Wildfire Smoke Help is a Green Builder Media public service for households navigating wildfire smoke.

How your plan is calculated

We use the area of one room or continuous open space. The smoke CADR target equals floor area × max(ceiling height, 8) ÷ 8, rounded up to the next 10 cubic feet per minute (cfm). This follows AHAM’s wildfire sizing rule at an 8-foot ceiling and scales for additional room volume. It is a comparison target, not a predicted pollution reduction or a safety determination.

We look up the tobacco-smoke CADR for an exact model in our verified starter catalog. Unknown ratings remain unknown. A multiroom home is not treated as one perfectly mixed room. HVAC and DIY capacity are not added without measured performance.

Product recommendations and prices

Good, Better and Best compare three researched Winix models: A231, D360 and 9800. Each is sized to the room; Best adds at least 25% capacity. Purchase and replacement-filter prices were checked on manufacturer pages October 19, 2026 and may change. Tax, shipping, future filters and electricity are additional. This is a limited shortlist, not a market-wide price comparison. Links carry no affiliate tracking and tiers are not paid placements.

CADR comes from manufacturer specifications and the historical AHAM dataset published by EPA in 2025. When figures differ, we use the lower smoke value. This is not a claim of current independent retesting. Five exact purifier models can be selected for existing-equipment credit; unknown models remain uncredited. DIY build performance and HVAC filtration are not assigned an assumed CADR.

Your answers stay with you

The questionnaire runs in your browser tab. We do not send your answers to a server, save them to cookies or browser storage, or ask for an address or account. Reloading or leaving the page clears your answers. A downloaded plan stays on your device. This site does not include analytics or advertising trackers. The smoke-map page embeds an external AirFire map, which loads third-party resources under its own privacy policies. The hosting provider may keep standard request logs.

Know the limits

Follow evacuation orders and local health guidance. This site cannot establish whether it is safe to remain in a home. Particle filtration does not remove all gases, and it does not replace professional assessment after fire damage or ash contamination. Never use ozone generators in occupied spaces.
